How confident are you that you’re a Christian and that you’ll be with God in heaven when you die? What gives you confidence that you’re truly a Christian, that you have entered into a relationship with God through Jesus that will continue forever?

1 John 5v11-13 says:

“God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”

These verses tell us several crucial things:

  • God wants us to be sure about our eternal destiny: “I write these things to you… that you may know that you have eternal life.
  • Having eternal life is dependent on having Jesus in your life. “He who has the Son has life…
  • There are no other criteria to be met in this verse, Jesus provides everything we need. Eternal life is not dependant on our effort, simply on having Jesus
  • If you have Jesus, then eternal life is not something you will get but something you already have. “…you may know that you have eternal life
  • If you already have eternal life you can never lose it (or the life that you had couldn’t have been eternal in the first place!)

How do we come to have Jesus in our life?

There are three different ways that we know whether we have the Son or not:

  • Trusting God’s promises in the Bible
  • The Holy Spirit giving us inward confidence that God is our Father (Romans 8v15-17)
  • Over time we are changed to become more like Jesus (1 John 2v3-6; 3v14)

Look at the following verses: Revelation 3v20; John 1v12

  • What are the promises in these verses?
  • What are the conditions and how do we meet them?
  • Have these conditions been met in your life?
  • Do you trust the promises we’ve just read?

If we’ve met the conditions and trust the promises in these verses then we’ll have confidence that we have Jesus and eternal life. Conversely, if we don’t have confidence then either we haven’t met the conditions or we don’t trust the promises. If we’re Christians, then our assurance will grow deeper over time as we get to know God better and he begins to transform our life.

If we’re Christians then we can also be sure of a number of other things:

  • We’re completely forgiven and dearly loved (John 3v16, Acts 10v43)
  • God has a wonderful purpose and plan for our lives (John 10v10, Matthew 28v18-20)
  • We’re indestructible in the love of God (Romans 8v38-39, John 10v27-30)
  • We are under a new authority and have a new destiny (Colossians 1v13-14, John 5v24)

Many Christians are unsure of their relationship with God and whether they’ll make it to Heaven. As a result their faith is built on a very insecure foundation. These verses offer a simple way that you can help others find true confidence in Jesus that will underpin their faith.
