The world’s a sinking ship but God’s heart is to save a people from it to be with him for eternity. As his children, God wants us to be involved with the things that are important to him. Jesus’ last words on the earth were to tell us to be witnesses for him throughout the world. A witness is someone who tells others what they have seen, heard and experienced. If you’ve known Jesus for 10 minutes or 50 years, then you can be a witness for him.
What do these verses tell you about God’s heart for those who don’t know him? Read Matthew 28v16-20. This instruction of Jesus is known as the Great Commission. It’s given to all followers of Jesus “to the very end of the age”. We’re instructed to take the initiative, “go”, and help others become followers of Jesus, “make disciples”, throughout the world, “of all nations”. In the ‘Get Connected’ card we looked at Matthew 22v36-39, the Great Commandment. The Great Commission involves us in helping others get connected and live out the Great Commandment. The Great Commission is not simply about helping people to become Christians, we are to “make disciples”. The word disciple means pupil or learner, so we’re to help people become life-long learners and followers of Jesus. This involves:
What do we learn from the following about carrying out the Great Commission? We cannot control how people will respond to Jesus and it’s important to remember at the end of the day we cannot save people, God alone can do that. Our job is to communicate the message of Jesus and live out his love and compassion. As we seek God the Holy Spirit will switch the lights on in people’s lives and work in their hearts to bring them to a place where they can respond to him. We must be faithful to speak and love but trust God to bring results in his own time. Jesus said to his first followers “Come, follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” Filled with the Holy Spirit and his love they changed the course of history forever. The Holy Spirit transformed them from fearful men and women into bold witnesses for Christ. He wants to do the same in our generation. Through his power, God longs to use us to change the world around us. Read John 20v21-22. How can you begin to get involved in making disciples of Christ (winning, building and sending?) ApplicationHave a think about the people God has put around you who don’t know him. How can you communicate God’s love with them in words and actions? Choose five people who don’t know Jesus and pray regularly for them. Look for opportunities to go through these cards with other new Christians. Reflect on
