Prayer is Communication

Communication is foundational to any relationship. Prayer is simply communicating with God. What are the roles of communication in a human relationship? How are these reflected in a relationship with God? What’s been your experience of prayer? What answers to prayer have you seen?

What do we learn about prayer from the following?

  • Matthew 6v5-13 and 7v7-11
  • John 15v7-8
  • Philippians 4v4-7
  • 1 Thessalonians 5v16-18
  • James 4v2-3

Through Prayer...

In prayer we share in the heart and mind of God and we become a part of what he’s doing, touching our friends, towns, countries and the whole world. What God wants to do through us far exceeds what we can do in our own strength and ability. Through prayer we draw on his endless resources. God used the early church to transform the Roman empire, changing the world through their prayers and passionate lives. He longs to do the same through us if we’ll trust and obey him.

Read Acts 4:23-31.

  • What were the key elements of their prayer and how did each element affect their relationship with God and their circumstances?

Prayer isn't just about asking for things. God’s not only interested in what we do, he’s interested in us and in enjoying a relationship with us. Through prayer we meet with God, enjoy him, worship him and share our life with him. The book of Psalms in the Old Testament is a book of prayers and songs of praise. Thy give us a window through which we can see into the author’s relationship with God. The Psalms are not simply a shopping list of requests for God to do things. They show the authors opening up their hearts to God, often with an honesty that can seem quite shocking.

Read Psalm 13.

  • What do we learn about prayer from this Psalm?
  • How easy do we find it to share our thoughts and feelings with other people?
  • How easy do we find it to be this honest with God?
  • How does honestly sharing our heart with God affect our relationship with him?
  • What effect do we see that praying had on the person who wrote the psalm?

Read Luke 5v16.

  • What do we learn about Jesus’ own practice of prayer?
  • How can we make prayer a part of our everyday life?
  • When is the best time for you to have 1 on 1 time with Jesus?
  • Where is a good place for you to do this?

If we ask God to help us as we pray, he will often drop specific things into our mind which he wants us to pray about. The following are some suggestions of things we could pray about:

  • Putting things right with God that have gone wrong (see Clean Slate).
  • Reflecting on God, his character, and his attitude towards us (see New ID).
  • Thanking God for things he’s done for us (see Rock Solid).
  • Asking God for things we need.
  • Sharing our hopes and fears, joys and sorrows with him.
  • Asking him to help us move on in our relationship with him and with those around us (see Real Life and Travelling Light).
  • Praying for the Christians and non-Christians we know in their situations and circumstances.
  • Praying for people to come to faith (see Bigger Picture).
  • Praying for situations around us and in the world.
  • Responding to what we’re reading in the Bible (See Staying Online part 1).

Application

Spend time each day sharing the things that are important to you at the moment with God and responding to his love for you. Pray for specific people and situations that God wants to change through your prayers.

Reflect on:
