To be a disciple of Jesus means to follow him and to learn from him how to live our every day life as he did. This isn't easy because the Bible pictures the Earth as a war zone and we face opposition. We must learn to apply our faith to our daily circumstances and relationships.

  • What’s been your experience of trying to live the Christian life?
  • What struggles have you faced?

The Bible describes three main enemies to living the Christian life:

  1. Our old nature (the flesh or sinful nature)
  2. The world (the culture and people around us)
  3. The devil.

What do we learn about our opponents from the following?

  • Romans 7v15-18
  • Galatians 5v16-17
  • 1 John 2v15-17
  • John 15v18-21
  • John 8v42-44
  • Acts 13v10
  • 1 Peter 5v8-9
  • Zechariah 3v1-2

We can overcome the opposition by keeping our friendship with Jesus close. We need to be filled with the Holy Spirit and follow his leading. To be tempted is not a sin (Matthew 4v1, 1 Corinthians 10v13). Temptation becomes sin when we entertain it or act on it. God promises a way out from temptation.

Read Galatians 5v13-26

  • What does living God's way look like here?
  • What do we learn about how to live God's way?
  • What does it mean to live by (v16), be led by (v18) and keep in step with (v25) the Spirit?

To live in the fullness and power of the Holy Spirit we need to know what God’s made available to us and how to use it. We need to continually receive his love, wisdom, power, forgiveness and grace. This comes to us as we spend time with him, praying, worshipping, reading and reflecting on the Bible. As we develop our friendship with God we learn to listen to him for his leading in our daily life and witness.

When Jesus comes and lives in us by his Spirit he begins a work of transformation and that work is a process. Because God’s not finished with us yet, we’ll continue to make mistakes and sin. As we grow up in our faith the critical question is not whether we make mistakes, but how we respond to them. We grow to maturity by walking moment by moment with Jesus over time and with others.

The Christian lives by faith which is simply trusting God. We enjoy God's forgiveness, power, peace and love as we trust his promises. We continue to follow him when it's hard because we believe he brings the fullest life possible and he's taking us somewhere worth going.

Application

Think of some practical ways to develop the habit of thanking and praising God for his work in your life and others around you. How will developing the habit of thanking and praising God help us in our Christian life (1 Thessalonians 5v16-18)? Identify an area in which you are facing opposition from the world, the flesh or the devil. What does it mean to trust God in this situation?

Reflect on

  • 2 Corinthians 4v16-18
  • Ephesians 6v10-18
  • Matthew 11v28-30
